Simon’s journey began when he was twelve years old, not long after the military junta took power in Sudan in a bloodless coup in1989. From 1989, real power in Sudan rested with the then Governor of Darfur, an Islamic hardliner. This man promoted the policy of ethnic cleansing including the murder of non-Muslim men and the rape of non-Muslim women as well as forced conversion to Islam. Simon, a Christian was encouraged by his mother to escape after his village was bombed in 1990. With a large group of people consisting mainly of young men, Simon walked a distance of approximately 600 km along the River Nile from his village in Sudan to the border with Uganda. He finally arrived in Kenya in 1993. He says that the group survived the long and dangerous trip by eating wild fruit and leaves and occasionally hunting for wild animals. Many in the group did not survive the journey as they became weak and tired and were killed by soldiers from the National Islamic Front. Some were killed by wild animals and others died as a result of hunger and thirst or diseases such as malaria, cholera, typhoid and dysentery. It was a question of survival of the fittest. He attributes his survival to his faith in God.
After finally arriving in Kenya, Simon spent ten years living in a refugee camp which was set up by the UNHCR. He recalls that the locals were very hostile towards the refugees and would often attack the camp at night and kill refugees. Fortunately, he had the opportunity of attending school and continuing his education whilst living in Kenya. During this period, he was devastated to learn that both his mother and brother had been killed in Sudan by the National Islamic Front.Simon applied for asylum in Australia in 2002 . He arrived in Australia in May 2004. He now lives in a sparsely furnished house at Woodville .Simon has managed to obtain employment at a chicken factory in Wingfield. Many of his fellow workers at the factory are also Sudanese. He is grateful to have found employment.
When asked about his impressions of Australia, he described it as a good country with friendly people. He says he misses many things about Sudan particularly the sense of community. At twenty six, Simon has spent more than half of his life as a refugee either fleeing violence or living in refugee camps. He has witnessed atrocities that have no doubt scarred him for life. Nevertheless, he is enthusiastic about life in his new country and keen to integrate. Like many refugees, he is testament to the strength of the human spirit.

Fifty-six year-old Zahiyeh Abed al-Aal greets us at the door. Zahiyeh and her husband, Hassan, live in a two-room mud shelter in Khan Dannoun together with their five children. The shelter has become more crowded than ever as Zahiyeh has welcomed her divorced sister and two children to stay with the family.
Zahiyeh's feelings of helplessness and despair about the family's living conditions are not difficult to grasp. The problems are manifold: When it rains, the sewage system overflows into the entrance area which is used as the kitchen; the roof is leaking; there is no shower, only a toilet outside. Ventilation and lighting are very primitive. This has been Zahiyeh's home her whole adult life. The lack of space makes it difficult for the children to study, do their homework and for the small cousins to sleep. Zahiya's two youngest children have already dropped out of the third and fourth grades.
There seems to be no way out of these miserable conditions. Both Hassan and Zahiyeh are of poor health. Hassan works occasionally as a sanitation labourer, but the salary is low and irregular. Zahiyeh suffers form diabetes and is without work.
Zahiyeh's face and eyes light up with hope when we inform her that she will benefit from the Directorate-General of the European Commission for Humanitarian Aid (ECHO) Shelter Rehabilitation Project. Her shelter will be demolished to make way for a new, more spacious one, including a kitchen, a bathroom and two more spacious rooms. The sewage problems will be solved and the new shelter will have better ventilation and proper electricity.
Implemented by UNRWA in Syria, the 2006 Shelter Rehabilitation Project is funded by ECHO through a contribution of €318,900. At least 15 families in Khan Dannoun will have their shelters reconstructed through ECHO funding of this project. The contribution will also benefit 50 families in Homs and Dare'a, whose shelters will be repaired on a self-help basis.
The total ECHO Shelter Rehabilitation Project 2006 contribution for Syria, Lebanon and Jordan amounts to €2 million.
One of the poorest refugee camps in Syria, Khan Dannoun is located some 20 kilometres south of Damascus. Established in 1950-1951, the camp is situated near the ruins of Khan Dannoun, which was built several centuries ago to give overnight accommodation to trading caravans on the ancient route between Jerusalem and Constantinople. In 1948, the ruins provided shelter for refugees from villages in northern Palestine.

WAN WAS borne in 1964 in Laos. He grew up in a small village near the Laos-Thailand border in the Northwestern part of the country. He became a refugee in Thailand and Australia, ironically after the Laotian Civil War (1953-1975).
He may be a refugee twice but he isn’t one in his heart. That is because he is ingenious in discovering life and making it interesting.
During the Laotian Civil War, Wan’s father served as a combatant with the American forces. His dad would come back now and then to see the family. It was a joyous occasion for everyone in the family – a celebration that everyone was alive, especially for his father who had to observe so many of his comrades die in battle.
This routine went on for many years and it finally ended in 1975. His father came back and it appears that he will stay home for good. The United States had to adhere to the 1973 Paris Peace Accord and withdraw American troops from Laos.
However, the Laotians who fought on the victorious Communist front began to give his father trouble. In 1976, Wan’s father took his family and other relatives in the dead of night across the border into Thailand to seek refuge.
Wan found himself in a refugee camp. Miserable or not, life in a refugee camp depends how one makes of it. He took it as an adventure and began to explore the big refugee camp. The camp was teeming with thousands of refugees from various ethnic groups. He learned Hmong from his neighbours and became friendly with the Royal Thai Army camp guards. He was also very friendly to members of the Yao ethnic group. Sneaking out was not a problem. Wan regularly visited relatives in Chiang Rai City of Thailand’s Changwat Province

At the later stage of his teenage years, he pushed up his age by a few years in order to enlist in the Royal Thai Army. On completion of his training, he was sent to the Thai-Cambodian border. For many years, he wondered why the top brass stationed him there. The truth is that he was a member of a shock troop formation whose role is to push back the expected invasion force of the Vietnamese army. This was during the time of the Cambodian-Vietnamese War which ended in the late 1980s.
Fortunately for Wan, the Vietnamese Army never came close to the Thai-Cambodian Border. He only became conscious of the fact that it was Chinese military activities along the Vietnamese-Chinese Border that saved his life after I told him in a 2003 conversation that Vietnam had sent its best forces to roll back China. Skirmishes between Chinese and Vietnamese military continued in the 1980s after the 1979 Sino-Vietnamese War.
As his unit’s point man, Wan was positioned a good distance ahead of his unit when they are out on patrol. He was sure that he would meet certain death if he was ordered to face the aggressive Vietnamese forces.
Wan was demobilised after a 6-year stint with the Royal Thai Army. He returned to the refugee camp where his family was based at. It was during this time that he took a fancy to a Thai lady and married her. They soon had a daughter. Having a family made him think of his future. He applied for emigration to Australia. The small and young family found themselves in Sydney, where he studied English and found a factory job to sustain his family.
A few years later he met an Aussie girl who was still schooling. He waited for her to finish university before marrying her. By this time, he had divorced his Thai wife. Wan gave her as much as he could. He bought a nice house and went on skiing trips in winter with her. He started a family again and she bore him a son. However, there were strains in their relationship and it ended in divorce. Wan was alone again.
Wan gave up on women and became more determined than ever to give his all to his siblings and cousins who went back to their native village. He bought land, reared fish in the fish ponds, built chalets and a restaurant to serve the local clientèle. He was often on the lookout to get them to go into other businesses. He became the driving force in his family. He wanted his own kith and kin to be well-educated. He provided monetary support to his siblings and cousins, so that they can attend the local colleges and universities.
Today, as the sole breadwinner, he is responsible for feeding and housing 25 members of his household. The money comes from his work in Australia. He works long hours and saves as much as possible. He flies back regularly to Laos to spend time with his household once every few months. While his love life has been a source of trouble, he found joy and solace in his devotion to household. This pattern of life has been going on for the last few years
